Why Temperature is Medicine

Most people think of heat and cold as things to avoid. We climate-control our homes, our cars, our offices. We’ve engineered discomfort out of daily life.

Which is exactly the problem.

Your body was built to adapt. Heat and cold aren’t just sensations to manage — they’re signals. Controlled temperature stress triggers a cascade of protective responses that exercise alone can’t replicate. We’re talking cellular repair, metabolic activation, cardiovascular conditioning, and neurochemical shifts that improve mood, focus, and resilience.

This isn’t biohacker nonsense. It’s physiology.


The Science of Hormesis

The fancy word is hormesis — the idea that small, controlled doses of stress make biological systems stronger.

You already believe in hormesis. You just don’t call it that.

Exercise is hormesis. You break down muscle fibers so they rebuild bigger. No stress, no adaptation.

Vaccines are hormesis. A tiny dose of a pathogen trains your immune system to fight the real thing.

Temperature exposure works the same way.

Heat stress triggers heat shock proteins (HSPs) — molecular chaperones that repair damaged proteins, protect cells from future stress, and reduce inflammation. Finnish sauna studies following thousands of people for 20+ years found that those who used saunas 4-7 times per week had 40% lower all-cause mortality and 50% lower cardiovascular mortality than once-a-week users.

Cold stress triggers a different but complementary response. Brief cold exposure spikes norepinephrine by 200-300%, sharpening focus and elevating mood for hours. It activates brown adipose tissue (BAT), improving metabolic flexibility. And it produces cold shock proteins that support brain health and resilience.

Heat and cold. Two more levers. Same principle: controlled stress → adaptation → stronger system.

Why Most People Get This Wrong

The wellness internet has made temperature therapy seem either mystical or extreme. You’ve got influencers screaming into ice baths at 34°F while reciting affirmations. You’ve got sauna bros cranking temps to 220°F and doing burpees on the bench.

None of that is necessary.

The research is clear: you need enough stress to trigger the response, but not so much that you’re just surviving. There’s a minimum effective dose for heat shock proteins. There’s a minimum effective dose for cold shock proteins. Go below it, nothing happens. Go way above it, you’re just suffering for Instagram.
